Child and adolescent psychotherapy provides valuable education, insight, and practical tools to understand, manage, and alleviate anxiety, mood, behavior, and relationship challenges.

When your child is anxious, withdrawn, irritable, overwhelmed, or acting out, it can affect every part of family life. Parents often find themselves walking on eggshells, fielding calls from school, losing sleep, or wondering how to help without making things worse. Child and adolescent psychotherapy offers evidence-based treatment where children and teens can build skills, process emotions, and make progress toward meaningful goals.

Therapy is tailored to each child’s needs and goals. Depending on what brings a family in, treatment may focus on anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, behavior challenges, relationships, or other concerns affecting day-to-day functioning.

Our primary treatment goals are to address the presenting symptoms; support healthy psychological development; and improve functioning at home, school, and in the community.

We also work closely with parents to guide their efforts to support their child. Often, family therapy can be a helpful complement to individual therapy—bringing the whole family together allows for open conversation, problem-solving, and meaningful insights.

Who therapy can help

Individual psychotherapy is often helpful for children and teens who are struggling with mood, fears, school stress, social challenges, anger, behavior problems, family conflict, or other emotional and behavioral concerns. Some families come in after an evaluation. Others start with therapy because they know their child needs support but are not sure what kind.

Family therapy is helpful when conflicts, communication problems, or life transitions affect relationships and disrupt the household.

What to expect from therapy

Most children and teens begin with weekly therapy sessions. Over time, frequency may change based on progress and goals. Treatment is goal-oriented, with progress revisited regularly using measures tied to the concerns that brought the family in. We reevaluate over time and consider when a different cadence, a break, or a new approach may make sense.

Our specific goals include helping children:

  • Identify and manage emotions
  • Cope adaptively with stressful situations
  • Develop behavioral control across environments
  • Improve learning and academic functioning
  • Communicate effectively
  • Form and maintain positive, healthy relationships
  • Recognize and make use of their innate strengths and talents

Each child receives an individualized treatment plan; our psychologists use evidence-based modalities to best meet their needs. Treatment approaches we offer include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy, DBT-A (12-18), DBT-C (7-12)
  • Interpersonal psychotherapy for adolescents (IPT-A)
  • Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT)
  • Integrative (theoretically informed combination of approaches)
