Child mental health consultations help families talk through questions about their child’s behavior, diagnosis, treatment, or what kind of support may help most.

Our psychologists provide consultation to families, schools, and other professionals.

Sometimes families do not seek an evaluation or therapy right away. Sometimes they prefer to get an expert opinion, a second set of eyes, or a thoughtful conversation about what may help next. Consultation differs from ongoing treatment in that it is typically time-limited and focused on a specific question, concern, or decision point.

Who can be involved in a consultation?

Families

Parents and caregivers sometimes have questions or concerns that do not require a full evaluation or course of treatment. We offer consultation for families who are seeking:

  • Guidance on whether a child's behavior, development, or emotional responses fall within the expected range for their age ("Is this normal?")
  • Help understanding a child's existing diagnoses and implications for daily functioning
  • Direction on how to proceed when a child is struggling but the appropriate next step is unclear
  • Recommendations for community resources, specialists, or support services
  • Guidance on how to talk with a child about a difficult topic, diagnosis, or family circumstance
  • Support navigating school systems, mental health systems, or medical care on behalf of their child
Schools

Our psychologists collaborate with schools to support children's academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success in the educational setting. School consultation services may include:

  • Participation in Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan meetings to provide clinical perspective and advocate for appropriate accommodations/ supports
  • Classroom observation and environmental assessment to help inform recommendations for behavior management, instructional strategies, and learning accommodations
  • Consultation with teachers, school counselors, and administrators regarding a child's behavior or emotional presentation
  • Review and interpretation of school-based evaluation data in conjunction with clinical findings
  • Guidance on classroom strategies and behavior intervention plans
  • Transition planning support for children moving between educational settings

Pediatricians and medical providers

Our psychologists maintain collaborative relationships with pediatric medical providers to ensure coordinated care. Medical consultation services may include:

  • Discussion of diagnoses and clinical findings to inform decision-making, including consideration of psychotropic medications
  • Collaborative care planning for children whose behavior or emotional concerns intersect with medical conditions or developmental diagnoses
  • Communication regarding treatment progress and response to inform ongoing medical management
