Internship Setting: The Retreat by Sheppard Pratt

About the internship: 

The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt, located in Towson provides residential mental health services. We provide highly personalized, expert care in a healing environment to treat depression, anxiety, mood, personality, and co-occurring disorders for adults with an average length of stay 20 days. 

Therapy services are provided in both group and individual treatment sessions and work as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team of nurses, clinicians, psychiatrists, wellness team, and direct care staff. The primary focus of care is on the maximization of functional potential and transition to their least restrictive, living environment with outpatient support. 

Length of internship:
  • 4-5 months or one semester

  • 18 hours/week
Eligibility requirements:
  • Current Student of an accredited Graduate level art therapy program. 
  • Masters or doctoral level student
  • Student must be enrolled at an academic Institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt.  
  • Students applying to this rotation will need a strong foundation in adult general psychiatric diagnoses [DSM%], mental health theory and related AT theory and practice, clinical reasoning, foundations of evidence-based practice, group theory and application, and teaching/learning concepts and applications related to staff, client, and caregiver education.  
General description of duties/projects:
  • Observe groups led by unit art therapist as well as diagnostic sessions to assist with learning.
  • Co-lead groups with supervisor to learn about managing and co-leading groups on the unit.

Internship Setting: Children’s inpatient unit in Towson, MD

About the internship: 

The short-term inpatient unit for children at Sheppard Pratt, located in Towson provides mental health treatment services for children aged 4-13 years of age with behavioral and emotional disabilities with an average length of stay from 7 to 9 days. Art Therapy services are provided in both group and individual treatment sessions and work as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team of nurses, clinicians, psychiatrists, education, and direct care staff. The primary focus of care is on the maximization of functional potential and transition of children to their least restrictive, living/learning environment. 

Length of internship:
  • 9 months, September to May
  • 18 hours/week
Eligibility requirements:
  • Current Student of an accredited Graduate level art therapy program. 
  • Masters or doctoral level student
