Internship Setting: Rehab & Recovery

Interns with Sheppard Pratt’s Rehab & Recovery Division will work in one of multiple clinical environments where clients require varying services depending on their care needs. Occupational therapy is provided in group settings and individually by OT interns who are supervised by a licensed occupational therapist.

Locations:
  • Psychiatric Day Program: Baltimore City, Catonsville, and Rosedale
  • Adult Residential Treatment Center: Frederick and Towson
  • Chesapeake Connections: Baltimore City
Eligibility requirements for Sheppard Pratt’s rehab & recovery OT internship program:
  • Current doctoral, master’s, or associate degree level student of an accredited occupational therapy or occupational therapy assistant program
  • Student must be enrolled at an academic institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt
  • A strong foundation in adult and young adult mental health theory and related OT theory and practice, clinical reasoning, foundations of evidence-based practice, group theory and application, and teaching/learning concepts and applications related to client, staff, and caregiver education

Interning with Sheppard Pratt’s Rehab & Recovery Division

Interns can expect to:
  • Administer OT assessments and analyze the findings
  • Develop and implement weekly OT group intervention session plans
  • Participate in individual and group OT sessions
  • Participate in clinical team meetings and receive ongoing supervision
  • Complete an individual evidence-based project designed to support client engagement and OT team learning
  • Receive ongoing clinical supervision and mentoring

Internship Setting: Hospitals

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Current student of an accredited Occupational Therapy Institution
  • OT students are Master’s or Doctoral degree level and OTA students are Associate's degree level
  • Student must be enrolled at an academic Institution that has an existing contract with Sheppard Pratt
  • Students applying to this rotation will need a strong foundation in child/adolescent mental health theory and related OT theory and practice, clinical reasoning, foundations of evidence-based practice, group theory and application, and teaching/learning concepts and applications related to staff, client, and caregiver education 
General description of duties/projects:
  • Develop and implement individual OT assessment and intervention as needed
  • Develop and implement 2-3 daily OT group interventions
  • Participate in daily treatment team meetings
  • Participate in weekly 1:1 supervision meeting
  • Document both group and individual treatment sessions in the electronic medical record
  • Complete one individual program development project

Internship Setting: Adolescent Residential Treatment Center (RTC)

We offer two levels of training in the Adolescent RTC (occupational therapy—12 weeks, occupational therapy assistant—8 weeks). 

  • Facility located in Towson
  • Provides special/regular education, mental health, and residential treatment services for adolescents ages 13-18 with behavioral and emotional disabilities
  • Average RTC length of stay is 6-9 months
  • Treatment focus is on the maximization of functional potential and transition of adolescents to their least restrictive environment
  • Group and individual OT services are offered to residents
  • Supervision ratio is 6-10 students to 3 clinical instructors (2 on-site, 1 off-site)

  • Participate in weekly group supervision meeting
  • Document both group and individual treatment sessions
  • Complete bi-weekly clinical reasoning/evidence based papers
  • Complete one individual program development project
  • Complete one group program development project with fellow intern cohort
