Laura Avigan, MD, is a psychiatrist at The Retreat by Sheppard Pratt, a residential program for adults. A graduate of the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt psychiatry residency program, Avigan has also completed a fellowship in psychoanalysis at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and an elective in psychodynamic psychotherapy at Austen Riggs Center. She earned her Doctor of Medicine at Ben-Gurion University after completing her bachelor’s degree in psychology at McGill University. Avigan has special interests in psychotherapy, personality disorders, cultural psychiatry, trauma, and the ways in which identity is shaped, threatened, and transformed across the lifespan. Her work focuses on how psychological processes interact with familial and cultural systems to influence symptom formation and shape treatment.
