Overview:

Veteran suicide rates are indicative of a serious and worsening crisis. In this presentation, we will discuss the latest evidence-based information on veteran suicide to improve attendees’ abilities in patient care, interpersonal communication, and systems-based practice. Given the collaboration with civilian providers who may have varying levels of understanding regarding military culture, there is a clear need for educational resources to help identify prevalent military-related illnesses like posttraumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury. Through improved cultural competency education, providers can develop skills that improve outcomes. We will discuss these skills, including how to utilize the Crisis Response Plan, to prevent suicidal behavior among at-risk veterans.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this lecture, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify three factors that contribute to at risk veterans.
  2. Recognize mental health disorders in at-risk veterans and distinguish at least two differences in the pathological process in veterans vs nonveterans.
  3. Define a Crisis Response Plan and identify the five key components included in the plan.
