Administrative Fellowship

The Administrative Fellowship at Sheppard Pratt is a one-year training program for healthcare management and administration graduates and students.

The Administrative Fellowship at Sheppard Pratt is a 12-month program for those who have completed the coursework for their master’s degree. This paid training program offers fellows the opportunity to work across the entire organization including in hospitals, communities , consulting and schools, exploring the continuum of mental healthcare in a variety of settings such as inpatient, outpatient, residential, urgent care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and research. The administrative fellowship provides an opportunity to develop work experience and build on knowledge gained in graduate coursework. The administrative fellowship provides an opportunity to build on knowledge gained in graduate coursework and gain core competencies required to be a successful healthcare leader.

The fellowship begins with an orientation to the different service lines in the system and the strategic and operational priorities of the organization. Then the fellow applies their background, interests, and experience to contribute to the system while gaining an in-depth understanding of its many components. Time is generally divided between work in strategy and operations with opportunities to work in a variety of care settings and departments. The fellow also has the opportunity to shadow clinical and operational departments and may gain supervisory experience. This program starts annually in June.

Preceptor

The administrative fellow will report to the Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, meeting with them on a regular basis. The CSO will provide ongoing support and guidance to the fellow and work with them to identify areas of interest and potential projects. 

Professional Development Events/Opportunities

The fellows may attend a variety of events hosted by professional organizations. These will include the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Congress in Chicago, Maryland Hospital Association Membership Meeting, and other professional events held by organizations such the Healthcare Council, Maryland Association of Healthcare Executives, and others in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. Fellows will also participate in leadership development offered by Sheppard Pratt. 

Sheppard Pratt Administrative Fellowship Program Requirements 

  • Required master’s degree (MHA, MBA, MHSA, MPH, or other related fields).
    • Candidates must have completed their most recent qualifying degree within 13 months of the fellowship start date. For fellows starting in June 2027, eligible graduation dates are May 2026 through June 2027.
    • Candidates who are on schedule to receive a master's degree upon completion of a fellowship are also eligible. Degree conferral is not required for this position.
    • Candidates receiving a master's degree from a graduate program accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) are preferred.
  • Relevant healthcare industry experience such as prior work experience, internship, externship, etc. 
  • Must be available to start working full time in June 2027, in-person at our Towson, MD campus.
