Virtual OCD & Anxiety Lecture Series: Sessions I & II

Join us for our 2021 Virtual OCD & Anxiety Lecture Series at Sheppard Pratt

SESSION I: Core Concepts In Diagnosing And Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder With Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Presented by: Jon Hershfield, MFT

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common, often debilitating, and chronic disorder with a reputation for being difficult to treat.  This reputation, however, conflicts with evidence that cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with an emphasis on exposure with response prevention (ERP) and related evidence-based approaches are effective.  Lacking an understanding of some core concepts in assessing and treating the disorder can result in misdiagnosis and implementation of ineffective interventions.  Furthermore, failure to identify less commonly understood symptoms as part of OCD can result in increasing shame and impairment in patients who were already apprehensive about seeking help.  This lecture will be an introduction to conceptualizing care for OCD patients and demystify the disorder and its most effective treatment strategies.

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Define obsessions and compulsions in the context of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  2. Differentiate cognitive restructuring from co-ritualizing.
  3. Describe different types of exposure and response prevention techniques.

SESSION II: Medication Protocols For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, New Research, And Differential Diagnosis
Presented by: Robert Hudak, MD

Education regarding Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders is lacking in most psychiatric residencies in the United States, and the amount of training is correspondingly low as well compared to other major psychiatric disorders. Research has shown that this lack of education leads to poor treatment outcomes for patients with OC Related Disorders. This lecture aims to teach the basic protocols for OCD pharmacotherapy as well as discuss complex cases and presentations and how this affects the choice of medical treatment and treatment planning for physicians and mental health providers.

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) treatment algorithm.
  2. Describe how to manage treatment-resistant OCD.
  3. List the criteria for neurosurgery in OCD and be able to explain why most patients referred for surgery are not eligible.
