Session V: Living Beyond Shame: ACT & Self-Compassion Strategies to Enhance Living

Speaker: Marisa T. Mazza, PsyD, Founder of choicetherapy

Overview: Feelings of shame can hinder clients' progress in treatment and life. In this experiential workshop, you will acquire skills to assist clients in overcoming shame using acceptance and commitment therapy and self-compassion. Clients can utilize these strategies in treatment and in their daily lives to enhance motivation, mood, and interpersonal connections.

 

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Recognize situations where self-compassion can be beneficial.
  2. Describe the concept of self-compassion.
  3. Apply self-compassion.

 

Session VI: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: The Basics and Beyond in 2024

Speaker: S. Evelyn Stewart, MD, FRCPC, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia (UBC); Chair, Child and Youth Mental Health Research, BC Children and Women’s Health Centre

Overview: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a common and debilitating condition that emerges in childhood and persists for decades unless properly addressed. In recent years, more has been uncovered about OCD risk factors and management. OCD can have ripple effects that extend beyond the individual with the diagnosis. Family members are often negatively impacted and drawn into accommodating behaviors. Therefore, to effectively manage a patient’s OCD, a combination of individual and family-based approaches may be required.   

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Describe the presentation of and risk factors for OCD.
  2. Identify the role of family in OCD presentation and treatment.
  3. Summarize evidence-based OCD treatment.
