Session I: Growth Mindset in OCD Treatment

Speaker: Ozge Gurel, PhD, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Overview: This presentation connects cognitive and behavioral interventions in OCD treatment with a growth mindset and value-based approach in mind. It covers designing and implementing effective exposure and response prevention (ERP) interventions, identifying thinking styles and connecting them to ERP for a healthier cognitive outlook, and enhancing a sense of ownership and expertise in clients to improve therapy outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Design and implement effective ERP interventions.
  2. Identify thinking styles that contribute to OCD and connect them to ERP interventions for bolstering treatment outcomes and maintaining long term gains.
  3. Use growth mindset concepts in CBT for OCD.

Session II: The Do's and Don'ts of Working with Perfectionists

Speaker: Jeff Szymanski, PhD, Founder and CEO, Getting to the Next Level Consulting, LLC.; Clinical Instructor (part-time), Harvard Medical School; Clinical Associate, McLean Hospital

Overview: “Clinical perfectionism” can occur on its own or in the context of many different disorders.  Since perfectionism is often aligned with one's ego, clinicians must guide clients in assessing their own strengths and weaknesses. This helps keep patients from feeling the clinician is trying to undermine their best attribute. In this this lecture, we will discuss individualized assessments, as well as several alternative ways to help clients challenge unhealthy perfectionistic behaviors, including differentiating between intention and strategy, using diminishing returns, changing one’s response to mistake making, strategies for prioritizing, learning when and how to use others for help, and the importance of taking time to recharge.

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  1. Define clinical perfectionism in at least two different ways.
  2. Identify two ways in which perfectionism “seduces” a client into using old, ineffective behaviors.
  3. Describe two new interventions they can use to encourage more effective behavior in individuals with unhealthy perfectionism.
