Overview:
Bipolar disorder is one among a number of disorders that can cause children to experience severe emotional dysregulation. But it can be difficult to recognize and diagnose mania in children due to their unique presentation and their high rates of comorbidities. Because mania is one of the primary factors differentiating bipolar depression from unipolar depression, distinguishing between the two in children can be difficult. Mania also shares many symptoms with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, increasing the likelihood of missed or mistaken diagnoses. In this lecture, we will discuss the diagnosis of mania in children, examining research addressing its clinical characteristics, comorbidities, course of symptoms, and recommended treatment.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this lecture, attendees will be able to:
- Recognize bipolar disorder in children and adolescents.
- Differentiate pediatric bipolar disorder from ADHD and unipolar depression.
- Identify and pharmacologically treat bipolar disorder and its co-morbidities.
