The Forbush School at Oakmont Upper School is a 12-month special education, certificate program, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, that provides educational services to students ages 12 to 21 with autism spectrum disorder, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), developmental delays, severe behavioral problems, multiple learning problems, and other related disorders.Forbush_OakmontJune2014_0384_2.jpg

Once enrolled, our experienced staff will review the child or adolescent’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and modify our instructional areas to fit the student’s needs to ensure maximum growth. These instructional areas can include communication skills, self-care, individualized academics, fine and gross motor skills, socialization skills, and recreational/leisure skills. Each student has an individualized schedule for programming that outlines his or her instructional day.

We are able to provide a small classroom setting, with five to six students per class, as well as a high staff to student ratio, to ensure the classroom is structured in a way to best assist students with severe behavioral problems. In addition to a very individualized educational program in the classroom, we also provide community-based instruction and vocational training both on campus and in the community. Our teachers, behavior specialists, related service staff, and supervisory staff all have considerable experience in creating a positive learning environment where children and adolescents with autism and related disorders, who are on a certificate track, can develop increased social skills and self-control, functional academics, communication, vocational, and personal management skills. Occupational and speech/language therapy is an integral part of our program.

Utilizing a student-centric, team-based approach, we implement the Maryland State Curriculum and the Syracuse Community Reference-Curriculum Guide for students with moderate and severe disabilities to help them successfully transition into the community.

We work hard to engage parents in their child’s education, providing daily opportunities to communicate with teachers, scheduling individual observations and meetings, including transition meetings, hosting parents’ night and other special events, and providing the opportunity to partake in parent support groups.

As part of Sheppard Pratt Health System, our passionate, dedicated staff has access to the best training, treatment practices, and technology, which in turn enables us to provide our students with the best possible educational opportunities. We actively collaborate with other Health System schools and professionals to share knowledge and learnings. Forbush_Oakmont_F1208.jpg
