The Stanley Research Program

The Stanley Research Program, founded in 1999, uses clinical studies to research schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and the role of infectious agents and inflammatory markers in these disorders.

Our goal is to provide a better understanding of serious mental illness and develop new methods of assessment and treatment. We are funded by the Stanley Medical Research Institute (SMRI) in Bethesda, Maryland, a nonprofit organization that supports research on the causes of, and treatments for, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We also conduct studies funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (formerly NARSAD).

Since our founding, we have evaluated more than 2,000 individuals with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, and recent onset of psychosis, as well as control individuals who do not have any history of psychiatric disorder.
