The Jefferson School at Finan Center is a 12-month general and special education program, located in Cumberland, Maryland, that provides a compassionate, nurturing learning environment for children with special needs to help them achieve their academic, social, and emotional goals. Through collaboration with the Allegany County Board of Education, we provide educational services to students ages five to 21 with emotional disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and other related disorders

Your child’s mental health and educational needs are our number one priority, and we leverage our staff’s expertise and our health system’s resources to ensure your child is receiving the best care and education on a daily basis. Once enrolled in one of our two programs – either Birch Court, which primarily serves students with autism spectrum disorder or Cedar Court, which serves students with emotional disabilities – we will review your child’s individual IEP and modify our instructional areas to fit the student’s needs to ensure maximum growth. These instructional areas can include communication skills, self-care, individual academics, fine and gross motor skills, socialization skills, and recreational/leisure skills.

Utilizing a student-centric, team-based approach, we implement the Maryland State Curriculum, College and Career Readiness Curriculum and the Syracuse Community Reference-Curriculum Guide for students with moderate and severe disabilities, and also offer a gradual, supported transition to public school, or post-secondary work or school. From our outdoor play and recreation area, which includes basketball hoops and a baseball field, to our aquaculture program, your child will have the opportunity to engage in innovative and creative learning opportunities in a supportive environment.

As part of Sheppard Pratt Health System, our staff has access to the best training, treatment practices, and technology, which in turn provides your child with the best education to meet his or her needs.

We also work to actively involve every parent or caretaker in the education of their child, maintaining close communication through telephone, email, and newsletters, as well as a daily interactive log and student progress meetings.

Our related services include:

  • Individual and group psychotherapy
  • Family therapy
  • Social work services
  • Educational assessment and psychiatric assessment
  • Medication management
  • Intensive treatment services
  • Speech and language, occupational, physical, mobility and vision therapies, and psychological assessment are provided to Allegany County students through contracted service agreements with Allegany County Public Schools.
