Clinical Suicidology: Innovations In The Assessment And Treatment Of Suicidal Risk

Presented by: David Jobes, PhD, ABPP

Clinical suicidology is a growing field with new theories and breakthroughs in the assessment and treatment of suicidal risk. New theories, lines of research, and the use of technology are enabling us to better understand reliable typologies of suicidal states and the evolving nature of suicidal ideation. What the emerging evidence shows is that “one size does not fit all.” New developments in the management of suicidal crises along with suicide-focused treatments proven to work through randomized controlled trials (RCT’s) are changing the prospects of clinically working with people who are suicidal. It is noteworthy that effective treatments directly target suicide risk independent of psychiatric diagnosis. Finally, new developments in suicide-related policy and a “stepped-care” approach to suicidal risk will be presented.

This presentation meets the requirements of the topic of laws ethics and risk management.

After this lecture the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe innovations in the clinical assessment of suicidal states.
  2. Define effective suicide-focused treatments proven through randomized controlled trials.
  3. Discuss how to match different suicide-focused treatments to different suicidal patients.
