OCD & Anxiety Spring Lecture Series: Session V & VI

Join us for our OCD & Anxiety Spring Lecture Series at Sheppard Pratt!

Session V: Assessing and Treating Co-Existing Eating Disorders and OCD

Presented by Kimberley Quinlan, LMFT

OCD is the most common coexisting disorder for people with eating disorders.  There is often an overlap between symptoms, making it hard for clinicians to create an effective treatment plan. In this workshop, attendees will learn how to differentiate between OCD and different eating disorders. Attendees will be able to define different eating disorders and how they may co-exist with OCD and compare different treatment modalities, depending on the patient’s symptomology.

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  • Differentiate between OCD and different eating disorder diagnosis.
  • Define different eating disorders and how they may co-exist with OCD.
  •
  • Compare different treatment modalities for OCD and co-existing eating disorders, depending on the patient’s symptomology

SESSION VI: Conceptualizing and Treating OCD in Autistic Individuals

This presentation addresses how OCD in autistic individuals may be missed, confused with autistic symptoms, or improperly treated. This issue exists due to the inherent complexities of this comorbidity, as well as a lack of guiding research and specialized training in regard to conceptualizing and treating autistic individuals with OCD. This presentation will help clinicians learn how to accurately diagnose OCD in autistic individuals, differentiate OCD from autistic symptoms, modify evidence-supported OCD treatments such as exposure and response prevention (ERP) for autistic individuals and make appropriate recommendations when additional services or higher levels of care are needed.

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  • Distinguish OCD symptoms from Autism-related Restrictive-Repetitive Behaviors (RRBs).
  • Recognize common fallacies about the treatment of OCD in autistic individuals.
  • Describe modifications that autistic individuals may need to benefit from evidence-supported treatments for OCD such as exposure and response prevention (ERP).
