OCD & Anxiety Fall Lecture Series: Sessions I & II

Join us for the OCD & Anxiety Fall Lecture Series!

SESSION I: Social Anxiety Disorder: Basics and Beyond

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) may be more prevalent than one might think. About 12% of Americans struggle with social anxiety in their lifetime. The impact of social anxiety is broad.  It can profoundly affect employment, relationship development, performance, and even using the bathroom. Without appropriate treatment sufferers may develop depression or utilize substances to help manage social situations. The social restrictions that came along with COVID-19 certainly did not help those who already felt uncomfortable in social situations. This presentation will assist in developing diagnostic skills for SAD and a deeper awareness of the struggles SAD creates. It will be the first step in being prepared to provide the relief millions with SAD deserve.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  • Identify the primary diagnostic criteria of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD).
  • Define assessment tools for SAD.
  • Describe at least 2 components of empirically based treatment modalities for SAD.

SESSION II: EASE for Misophonia:  A New Psychological Model and Therapy

Misophonia is a condition characterized by an overwhelming emotional reaction to common everyday sounds such as eating and/or breathing. Most suffers are left to cope using avoidance or other unhelpful forms of temporary relief without any way to manage or reduce the symptoms of this condition. The focus of this talk is to gain an understanding of Misophonia from a psychological perspective and to learn the foundations of a therapy protocol designed to treat it. This talk will review relevant literature that serves as the foundation for the therapy and cover specific therapeutic tools that can be taught to individuals suffering from Misophonia.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  • Describe psychological phenomenon associated with Misophonia discussed in the literature
  • Recognize core elements of the psychological model of Misophonia.
  • Identify the core skills of EASE.
