Live Grand Rounds: Frank Sinatra - Aging and Creative Resilience

Join us in person for our special Harry Stack Sullivan Award Lecture at our newly renovated Conference Center on Sheppard Pratt’s Towson campus!

Those unable to attend in person are welcome to watch the live stream online.

Presented by: Jeffrey Lyness, MD, President & CEO, American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology, Inc.

Overview:

Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) stood out as one of the most admired and influential performing artists of the 20th century. He had a profound and enduring impact on subsequent popular singers, though both his public image and personal life were marked by controversy. This presentation will use images, audio, and video clips to trace Mr. Sinatra's professional journey spanning six decades. We will discuss his lifelong struggle with alcohol use, periods of despondency, and struggles with suicidality. Special attention will be given to his handling of the aging process, including how he continued to tour in concert despite the progressive dementia that would eventually end his career. Sinatra’s story has rich implications for our understanding of the potential for creative resilience in aging. But it also illustrates the limitations on that resilience posed by illness and functional impairment.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this lecture, attendees will be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship of Mr. Sinatra’s complex personality and mood symptoms to his extraordinary achievements as a performing artist.
  2. Discuss the potential for continued creativity and quality of life in people with neurodegenerative dementia.
  3. Identify the implications of these themes for our clinical work with older adults.
