Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds: Trauma-Informed Care on Inpatient Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Units

THIS LECTURE IS AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY.

Speaker: Anna Kerlek, MD, associate clinical professor in psychiatry, Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center; psychiatrist, Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Overview

In this lecture, we will discuss the concepts of trauma-informed care (TIC) and why it matters. TIC is not simply a mandate to reduce seclusion and restraint rates. Dr. Kerlek will review several models of TIC designed for acute care settings, from theoretical background to more practical implementation strategies.

Attendees will learn specifics about seclusion and restraint data at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and familiarize themselves with the challenges of gathering national data to benchmark. This lecture will describe how the pandemic and other confounders may have affected the clinical practice of treating traumatized, hospitalized youth. We will also discuss potential ways to improve staff retention and family satisfaction.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  1. Recognize the extensive prevalence of trauma-exposure in hospitalized youth, and therefore the need for trauma-informed care (TIC).
  2. Summarize the likely benefits of TIC in the acute care setting and consider proposing culture change within your own institution, if warranted.
  3. Identify that TIC is collaborative, system-wide and must be supported by leadership, yet floor staff may still experience vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and/or burnout.
