Overview

In this Grand Rounds presentation, Dr. Leibowitz will provide an overview of the most recent edition of the adolescent chapter in the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) Standard of Care. WPATH is the leading international authority on transgender healthcare and has been in existence since 1979 when it published its first set of guidelines that made no mention of children or adolescents.

Prior to this eighth edition, which was published in September 2022, the previous iteration was published over a decade prior. In that timeframe, the clinical demand has outpaced the research advancements with respect to delivery of gender affirming care for adolescents who are transgender and/or gender diverse.  As lead of the adolescent chapter, Dr. Leibowitz oversaw the development of the chapter that took almost five years to complete and provides a set of recommendations based on the most available evidence and international expert consensus.
