Overview:

Suicide is a leading cause of death among young people, and therefore an urgent concern in both public health and clinical practice. In Dr. King's presentation, we will review the demographic and clinical factors contributing to adolescent suicide attempts, emphasizing comprehensive risk prediction models. We will explore various risk factors and examine the complexities surrounding suicide risk screening. We will consider evidence supporting three distinct screening tools for assessing adolescent suicide risk, weighing their respective merits and limitations. To conclude, we will discuss empirical findings identifying warning signs in the 14 hours preceding adolescent suicide attempts, providing insight for intervention strategies.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this lecture, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how early life adversity can affect individuals on neurobiological levels.
  2. Describe two suicide risk screening strategies for adolescents.
  3. Identify two warning signs for adolescent suicide attempts that have been identified in research with parents and caregivers.
