Grand Rounds: Ethical Issues in Treating LGBTQ Patients

Join Jack Drescher, MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University; Adjunct Professor, New York University; Training and Supervising Analyst, W.A. White Institute, for this free Grand Rounds lecture.
Overview:

The Principles of Medical Ethics by the American Psychiatric Association underscore competence, respect, and current knowledge as essential foundations for appropriate professional conduct toward LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual) patients. This presentation will define key terms and examine historical attitudes toward LGBTQIA+ psychiatric patients, which ranged from patronizing to overtly hostile. In contemporary clinical practice, the focus has shifted from attempting to "cure" homosexuality or "transsexualism" to assisting LGBTQIA+ patients in living authentically according to their own natures and desires. We will discuss common clinical questions posed by LGBTQIA+ patients, sexual orientation conversion efforts (SOCE), therapist self-disclosure, and how therapists should approach LGBTQIA+ patients. Additionally, we will delve in to controversies surrounding the treatment of transgender children and the ethical considerations that can arise in these clinical interactions.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the kind of questions LGBTQ patients frequently ask of clinicians.
  2. Understand issues specific to the treatment of LGBTQ patients.
  3. Recognize important ethical principles salient to the treatment of LGBTQ patients.
