Co-Occurring OCD and PTSD: Implications for Assessment and Treatment

Trauma and PTSD are highly prevalent among individuals with OCD, yet remain underassessed and undertreated in specialty care programs. There are a myriad ways that trauma and PTSD can intersect with OCD and disrupt evidence-based treatment for OCD. This lecture will address these intersections and will provide concrete clinical recommendations for assessing, conceptualizing, and treating them within the context of evidence-based treatment.

Target Audience This activity is intended for physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and other mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  1. Differentiate similarly presenting and functioning symptoms of OCD and PTSD.
  2. Explain the similarities and differences in exposure therapy approaches for OCD and PTSD.
  3. Apply what is learned about exposure therapy for co-occurring OCD and PTSD to their own caseload.
