There are two main rules in HIPAA: the Privacy Rule and the Security Rule.

Through the Privacy Rule, there are specific national standards that all health care providers must follow in regards to the protection of specific types of health information.

Through the Security Rule, a national set of security standards was established that protects how specific types of health information can be stored or transferred electronically.
