Changing Lives Together

Q&A with Esther Chung

Why are you an art teacher?

Growing up, I always loved art. It gave me a sense of freedom, a way to express emotions that words often couldn’t capture. As I created, I felt empowered, and that empowerment sparked a lifelong passion for art. Over time, that passion evolved into a love for art education. I wanted to give future generations the same sense of creative freedom and self-expression that shaped me.

I love empowering students. I thrive on those moments when their eyes light up with creativity, when they take even the smallest step forward, or when they connect what we’re learning to their own lives. Every achievement, big or small, is a milestone worth celebrating because each step contributes to their growth and success.

Why do you love being a teacher at Sheppard Pratt?

Being an educator at Sheppard Pratt is a truly unique experience. Here, we do more than just teaching. We support students in deep, meaningful ways. What sets Sheppard Pratt apart is its collaborative environment, where educators work closely with many different professionals as a team. This level of collaboration enriches our understanding of student needs and enhances our ability to make a lasting impact. Every student’s journey is unique, and as educators, we adapt and grow alongside them. It goes beyond the classroom, creating a supportive and transformative learning experience.

What is it like to see a student succeed?

Every success, no matter how small, matters. These moments accumulate over time, shaping a student’s confidence and leaving a lasting impact. My classroom is filled with little victories. Whether it’s a student grasping a difficult concept, finding their creative voice, or pushing through a challenge, each step forward is worth celebrating. Some students may take longer to reach their breakthroughs, but I make it my mission to ensure that by the time they leave my class, they carry with them a memory of overcoming obstacles, persevering, and feeling proud of their growth. Witnessing these moments is the most rewarding part of being an educator.

Can you share one of your favorite activities each year?

Our annual Art Show! We invite families and staff members to celebrate student creativity through exhibitions and murals displayed throughout the school, hands-on activities, and food. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their work, for families to engage with the school community, and for us to celebrate together.
