New Spaces, New Hope

In October, Sheppard Pratt celebrated the grand opening of its new Adult Residential Treatment Services in the heart of Towson.

Our residential treatment services are dedicated to helping adults with mental health conditions stabilize during a crisis, providing needed housing, and building the skills they need to live independently while receiving comprehensive, wrap-around mental healthcare and services. These programs are central to our mission of meeting people where they are and providing the right level of care at the right time.

“Typically, when looking at a residential service for people with mental health conditions and co-occurring disorders, facilities aren’t desirable or in desirable locations,” says Marshall Henson, vice president and chief operating officer, community services. “At Sheppard Pratt, that’s a characteristic that sets us apart: We intentionally ensure our programs are welcoming, inviting, and accessible. That empowers the people in our care to truly focus on treatment and recovery as opposed to compromising any aspect of their lifestyle.”

At our new location, our goal is to help residents achieve their highest possible level of independence and community functioning. Beyond residential support, our residents receive personalized, holistic care that can include medication, therapy, supported employment and education, and independent living skills development. 

These types of programs help people avoid higher levels of care such as emergency departments or inpatient units and help others transition from those higher levels of care sooner than they otherwise could.

As these services are part of the Sheppard Pratt continuum, our residents can also readily be connected to both higher and lower intensities of care, as well as specialized expertise in a breadth of specific diagnoses—meaning they can get all the care they need, all from Sheppard Pratt.

“Every community is interacting with our patient population every day as they go about their business,” says Henson. “People don’t realize it because we do such a good job integrating into communities and focusing on high quality individual care and outcomes. Our residential treatment services are a perfect example of that. Sheppard Pratt is strengthening communities from the inside out. When you think about community development, you think about access to help, education, public safety, and jobs. Sheppard Pratt does all of that and provides access to healthcare.”
