Groundbreaking Developments

Fall

In Howard County, the demand for quality mental health services is rapidly escalating. Nearly one in four county residents receives help or takes medicine for their mental health, and almost half experience extended bouts of anxiety.

To help address the escalating need, Sheppard Pratt broke ground on a 16-bed residential crisis program at its Baltimore/Washington Campus in June. It will serve as a hospital diversion program and a step down from inpatient hospitalization.

The state of Maryland has committed $2.8 million in capital grants; Howard County is providing an additional $2.25 million in capital support.

“This is a collaborative approach between Sheppard Pratt, state leaders, and Howard County to address an urgent need for services that reduce unnecessary hospitalizations and emergency department visits,” explains Harsh K. Trivedi, MD, MBA, president and CEO of Sheppard Pratt.

“As a community, we must continue to invest in our behavioral health infrastructure to ensure every resident has the resources and care they need to live a healthy and supported life,” says Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. “This new residential crisis facility is another bold step toward a healthier, more supportive community and future for all.”
