Extended Treatment at Ruxton House and Magnolia House

Vibrant, Welcoming Therapeutic Communities

For those who would benefit from extended treatment before returning to independent living, The Retreat offers two transitional living programs: Ruxton House and Magnolia House. Both transitional living programs offer a supportive, therapeutic, home-like setting where residents can stay while continuing treatment on an outpatient basis. The programming at Ruxton House and Magnolia House emphasizes rehabilitation, recovery, improved self-care, and reintegration into the community. Both houses are staffed 24 hours a day by experienced mental health professionals who help residents focus on their outpatient treatment plans and begin the transition back into the community.

Therapeutic Programming

Ruxton House

At Ruxton House, residents find the support they need to successfully transition from the intensive, round-the-clock programming at The Retreat to life in their home communities: Ruxton House provides a ‘middle ground’ where residents can continue their therapeutic work while simultaneously reintegrating into the community.

Therapeutic offerings at Ruxton House include art therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, physical wellness, psychodynamics, and more. Residents also continue their individual therapy work with their treating doctor from The Retreat. When not participating in therapeutic programming, residents are encouraged to engage in the community - whether through working, volunteering, or attending school – so they have a meaningful foundation for returning to everyday life.

Magnolia House

The program at Magnolia House is specially designed for those who would benefit from gaining and honing independent living skills – many residents have not successfully lived on their own before. The on-site mental health professionals focus on embedding occupational therapy into all aspects of life at Magnolia House. Residents leave Magnolia House with a new capacity for self-sufficiency, from planning and cooking meals, to applying for jobs and volunteer opportunities, to building and engaging in healthy communities.

Therapeutic offerings at Magnolia House include dialectical behavior therapy, psychodynamic groups, yoga and movement, and a strong focus on occupational therapy. Residents can expect to gain the skills they need to manage their home, finances, meals, time, and more. In addition to group therapeutic programming, residents continue to engage in individual therapy with their treating doctor. When not engaging in Magnolia House programming, residents put their new skills into practice through volunteer opportunities, engaging in schooling, applying for jobs, planning and preparing meals, and more. Upon discharge from Magnolia House, residents are well-equipped to establish a meaningful, independent life.

Admission and Pricing

After completing a stay at The Retreat, many residents find that they would benefit from additional treatment at a less-intensive level of care before returning to a fully independent living situation. At Ruxton House and Magnolia House, we provide a therapeutic, comfortable home for individuals recovering from severe mood disorders, debilitating anxiety, personality disorders, or other disabling mental health conditions. Many residents have substance use or addiction issues in addition to mental health challenges.

Criteria for Admission

All residents must have completed a stay at The Retreat’s residential program before moving to Ruxton House or Magnolia House. It’s important that we determine whether every resident would benefit from supported community living.

Facility Rules

Ruxton House and Magnolia House residents must follow facility rules to stay at the house. These rules help keep all residents safe and accountable during their recovery. For example, residents must practice complete sobriety during their stay. If your symptoms are too severe for independent living in Ruxton House or Magnolia House, we can offer you another appropriate level of care.

Payment Policies

Self-Pay

Ruxton House and Magnolia House are self-pay programs that do not participate with any insurance plans. When you arrive, you must submit a nonrefundable payment equal to a four-week stay. After that, residents must pay before receiving ongoing care.

Rates

The daily rate varies from $1,000 to $1,275,  depending upon your accommodations. The cost includes meals, case management support, and programming. Residents pay for individual therapy sessions on a per-session basis. Other services provided through Sheppard Pratt's Towson location, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, are paid for separately.

Length of Stay

We ask residents to commit to at least a four-week stay at Ruxton House or Magnolia House. Many people choose to stay for several months or longer, depending on their recovery and clinical needs.

Planning for Discharge From Transitional Living

We understand that it can be challenging to return home or move into a new place after a stay with us. But you’re not alone. Our mental health services professionals work with you to design an aftercare plan that will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle during your recovery.

During your stay at The Retreat, Ruxton House, or Magnolia House, you’ll work with our staff to define what a healthy life looks like for you. Before you leave, your clinical team will work directly with you to help you create a new life and a meaningful future.

We replicate your detailed, personalized treatment plan by connecting you to:

  • Outpatient psychiatrists, who receive a complete update about your treatment before you transition to their care
  • Outpatient therapists who offer treatment methods that work for you
  • Complementary treatment, such as yoga, personalized physical training, or other offerings that have been effective during your stay at The Retreat

We also help you transition into your new community, assisting with everything from finding volunteer opportunities, to signing up for continuing education classes, to providing guidance throughout the relocation process.
