Our Child Unit, located on our Towson campus, is a 16-bed unit for the rapid assessment and stabilization of children ages four to 12 who require the structure and safety of an inpatient setting either because of the severity of their condition or to properly and safely manage their medication. While we treat all psychiatric conditions on this unit, the majority of our patients are diagnosed with a mood disorder and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Most of the patients admitted to this unit come from the hospital emergency room, our Crisis Walk-In Clinic, or are referred by their psychiatrist.

Treatment on this unit is very structured, similar to a school setting, and parents are able to visit frequently. The average length of stay on this unit is 10 days. We focus on crisis stabilization, so that the child can move past the crisis, and be reintroduced to the community. Our discharge coordinators work with the child and his or her family to find the best and least restrictive placement for them, whether it is within our Day Hospital, an in-home service, or outpatient care.

“Thank you for helping my son; it was very overwhelming, but glad I was able to bring him for services. Now he will get the help and resources he needs."
