Trauma Disorders Workshop: Complex PTSD

Join us for our Trauma Disorders Workshop

Complex PTSD
Presented by: Judith Lewis Herman, MD

The concept of complex post-traumatic stress disorder is an attempt to formulate the protean sequelae of prolonged, repeated trauma. In contrast to a circumscribed traumatic event, prolonged and repeated trauma can occur only when the victim is in a state of captivity, unable to flee, and under the control of the perpetrator. Examples of such conditions include prisons, concentration camps, and slave labor camps or plantations. Such conditions also exist in some religious cults, in brothels and other institutions of organized sexual exploitation, and in some families. The diagnosis of Complex PTSD is now recognized in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11, 2018). This lecture will review focus on the diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome, with a particular emphasis on the value of group psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this lecture, attendees will be able to:

  2. Identify symptoms of Complex PTSD.
