Workshop

Spring 2019 Psychology Workshop Series: Culturally Relevant Clinical Work with African Americans

This workshop will address the psychological issues that may be experienced by individuals who identify as African American, and will present information about the experiences of African Americans that may have an impact on psychologist practice and which may present clinical challenges. These issues include sociocultural experiences related to race, gender, and social class. The focus of this activity will be on culturally relevant clinical strategies for working with this clinical population. These strategies include how to establish a stronger therapeutic alliance, develop more effective interventions, and promote resilience among African American clients. Case examples will be presented.

After attending this lecture, clinicians will be able to:

  • Identify psychological issues that may be experienced by individuals who identify as African American.
  • Describe challenges in clinical practice related to the sociocultural experiences (e.g., race, gender, class) of African Americans.
  • Identify culturally relevant clinical strategies that can assist in establishing a stronger therapeutic alliance, developing effective interventions, and promoting resilience among African American clients.
