Session V - Demystifying and Treating Panic Disorder

Panic Disorder presents in nearly 3% of the U.S. population in a given 12-month period (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Often, people mistake the symptoms of panic for another catastrophic physical condition, and it is the most common reason for seeking treatment at the emergency room for noncardiac chest pain (Dark et al., 2016). Those who suffer with panic disorder often feel as if the experience comes out of nowhere and is out of their control. This workshop will focus on expanding knowledge on helping clients better identify and respond to panic symptoms and applying the most effective treatment strategies and tactics for panic.

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  • Recognize the common symptoms of a panic attack.
  • Identify how to demystify the panic cycle with your clients.
  • Apply the most effective non-pharmacological treatment approaches for panic disorder.

SESSION VI: Understanding and Treating Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a chronic maladaptive pattern of excessive perfectionism, preoccupation with orderliness/detail, and need for control over one’s environment that frequently co-occurs with OCD and can complicate its treatment. Despite its prevalence, many clinicians are not aware of how to treat OCPD. Dr. Pinto will review the core features of OCPD, how the condition impacts functioning, and explain how it can be differentiated from OCD. Then he will focus on cognitive behavioral therapy interventions for the maladaptive traits and behaviors of OCPD. Finally, Dr Pinto will discuss the challenges of working with these patients and offer ways of overcoming treatment obstacles.

Learning Objectives:

After this lecture, registrants will be able to:

  • Describe the core features of OCPD and how the condition impacts functioning.
  • Differentiate OCPD from OCD.
  • Identify specific CBT interventions for OCPD.
