During the admissions process, we meet with each new student and their family to get to know them. We use IEP assessments and data collected during the admissions process to determine the best class placement for each student in our school.

Our students are required to take cultural arts classes, and attend their academic classes based on their readiness. We believe in maintaining an individualized and safe environment for learning so that our students gain the tools they need to integrate into the larger school community. We meet our students at their level, working on skills to support their transitions.

While in the Sheppard Pratt program, our students receive individualized on-grade level academic instruction from our special education teachers based on the Anne Arundel County Public School curriculum, which is differentiated depending on each student’s needs. As students meet their academic and social goals and are ready, we integrate them into the public school classrooms at Millersville Elementary, where they receive on-grade level instruction alongside their general education peers. As needed, our educational assistants support students in the general education setting, and our teachers collaborate with the Millersville staff to ensure successful transitions. While in the general education classrooms, our students continue to receive their required accommodations, and our team works with the Millersville teachers to support students.

We create a welcoming atmosphere at Sheppard Pratt School - Millersville Elementary, incorporating fun activities, sensory breaks, and functional learning throughout the day. We use Anne Arundel County’s curriculum, which is hands-on and practical, involving crafts, manipulatives, and technology. Each classroom is equipped with an interactive whiteboard, iPads, and computers, which allow our students and teachers access to the Internet for current events and supplemental teaching aids. We use structured schedules, graphic organizers, visuals, and sequencing to reinforce instruction to address executive functioning and help students access learning.

Integrative Learning

We benefit from being located within Millersville Elementary School, as our students have access to everything that it has to offer. They are fully integrated with their Millersville peers for cultural arts classes including physical education, art, music, media, lunch, and recess. Students also attend school-wide special events, such as assemblies, field day, and more.

Support and Services

We teach academics, but we also provide our students with structured and supportive opportunities to gain independence and manage behaviors. To best meet the needs of our students, we use research-based practices, social skills instruction, and sensory integration strategies that we integrate throughout the day. Additionally, our students receive individual and/or group counseling every week to help them hone their communication, social interaction, and coping skills as they prepare for their independent futures.

In addition to regular physical education classes, we have a sensory/motor skills room that our staff use with our students as needed. The educational team uses a variety of resources, such as zones of regulation, to teach coping skills and strategies that help our students learn to understand their feelings. Students also engage in using computers; participating in mindfulness activities; and taking part in games that improve gross motor skills, coordination, and social skills. Additionally, our students receive occupational therapy and speech and language therapy as specified in their IEPs.
