The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt offers a
comprehensive continuum of treatment services for the patient with complex
eating disorders. The continuum includes inpatient, day hospital and intensive
outpatient services, as well as ongoing outpatient treatment provided by The
Center for Eating Disorders, P.A. The program is designed to respond to both
the psychiatric and medical aspects of eating disorders, with a comprehensive
array of mental health and consultative medical resources.
Eating Disorders include a range of conditions that involve an
obsession with food, weight and appearance, to the degree that a person's
health, relationships and daily activities are adversely affected. The primary
diagnostic conditions associated with Eating Disorders are:
|
• Anorexia Nevrosa
• Bulimia Nervosa
• Binge Eating Disorders
|
The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt is a
specialized program for adults, adolescents and children that provides
comprehensive treatment by experienced, highly trained professionals. Located
in spacious surroundings on a beautifully landscaped suburban campus, the
center is specifically designed to provide a comfortable, caring, secure and
safe environment in which patients begin the difficult work toward recovery.
A team of Board certified psychiatrists coordinate a
multi-disciplinary team of professionals, including nurses, licensed clinical
social workers, registered dieticians, expressive arts therapists and
psychologists. Medical problems are closely monitored by a carefully selected
panel of consulting subspecialists.
The program's personalized treatment approach has evolved from
extensive experience as well as research on the biological, psychological and
social factors involved in these complex illnesses. The program operates under
the clinical leadership of Harry A. Brandt, M.D., Medical Director and
Associate Medical Director Dr. Steven F, Crawford, nationally recognized
authorities on the treatment of eating disorders.
Hospital based program components include:
|
• 22 inpatient beds in a specially
designed and elegantly appointed setting;
• 12 hour a day, seven day a week Day
Hospital program;
• Four hour, late day Intensive
Outpatient Program; and
• Ongoing support groups
|
Each person entering the program receives a complete assessment
by a psychiatrist. Additional information is gathered from a nutritional
evaluation by a registered dietitian. During this evaluation process,
information about the course and development of symptoms, underlying issues and
related complications is reviewed. Findings from the assessment are presented
and a personalized treatment plan is developed. When the eating disorder is
life threatening or has serious medical complications, referral to the
inpatient, day hospital or intensive outpatient program is recommended.
During the treatment phase, there is a focus on each patient's
physical condition and emotional needs. Drawing on the personalized treatment
plan, a systematic, therapeutic approach utilizes one or several of the
following modalities:
|
• Therapy – individual, family, group
and expressive arts
• Nutritional Counseling
• Psychoeducation
• Medications, as appropriate
|
Throughout treatment, patients gradually develop new, more
effective coping skills while remaining in a supportive and safe environment.
Following inpatient or day hospitalization, outpatient treatment is utilized to
consolidate treatment progress. Therapy is often gradually tapered to allow for
testing of newly acquired abilities with careful, ongoing monitoring of eating
disorder symptoms. Additionally, free weekly support groups are led by members
of the professional staff.
