Sheppard Pratt Opens New Replacement Hospital Facility

On May 12th of this year, Sheppard Pratt dedicated its brand new, state-of-the-art replacement hospital facility. With 192 all private rooms and baths, this new hospital now serves as the setting for the majority of Sheppard Pratt’s inpatient services on its Towson, MD campus.

Dubbed the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Building after a major gift from the prestigious Weinberg Foundation in Baltimore, Sheppard Pratt’s new hospital is the most modern psychiatric facility in the country. Designed by the architectural pairing of Robert A. M. Stern and HDR, Inc., the exterior of the facility was designed to blend with the signature Victorian architecture of the original Sheppard Pratt Hospital buildings, themselves designed by Calvert Vaux and opened in 1891. Those buildings are undergoing renovation and will continue to house a variety of day hospital, residential and other programs.

The interior of the new Sheppard Pratt Hospital was designed to maximize patient privacy and safety. With separate circulation corridors for patients and staff versus visitors, a dedicated ambulance entrance, centralized nursing stations with optimal visual control, spacious patient areas and integrated flex corridors to allow for incremental census, the new hospital addresses many of the functional limitations of the buildings it replaced.

The Weinberg Building is home to 11 distinct inpatient units, which include:
  • Geriatrics
  • Geriatric Neuropsychiatry
  • Child
  • Adolescent (Male, Female)
  • Adolescent Neuropsychiatry
  • Adult Crisis Stabilization
  • Adult Dual Diagnosis
  • Adult Psychotic Disorders
  • Adult Trauma Disorders
  • General Adult

  • In addition, Sheppard Pratt operates a 22-bed Eating Disorders program in renovated space in the original buildings.

With a total project cost of $92 million, the new facility comprises 230,000 square feet. At more than 6,000 admissions per year, Sheppard Pratt is Maryland’s largest provider of behavioral health services. The new facility aligns Sheppard Pratt’s physical facilities with its national reputation as one of the country’s leading psychiatric hospitals.

Born of the 19th century humane treatment movement inspired by social reformer Dorothea Dix, Sheppard Pratt remains to this day as one of the country’s few freestanding, non-profit psychiatric facilities. National referrals to Sheppard Pratt’s new hospital are welcomed. Admission inquiries can be directed to 410-938-3800. After more than 114 years, what’s old is new again at Sheppard Pratt.
