Hannah More School is a nonpublic day school for students, grades 6-12, with emotional
disturbance, autism, Asperger syndrome, and other learning disabilities, health
impairments or multiple disabilities, and whose needs require a specialized setting
for education. A part of Sheppard Pratt since November, 2012, Hannah More School
has been providing individualized academic, vocational and therapeutic programs
to students on its Reisterstown campus since 1978, and has subsequently established
schools in Anne Arundel county. The staff are committed to implementing programs
in a nurturing and academically challenging environment that will enable students
to achieve success in school and beyond.
Referral Process
Students come to Hannah More through a referral process. The referred student’s
local school district office sends information about the student to Hannah More
for consideration, after it has been determined that the local school is not able
to implement the student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). Previously during a
central IEP meeting the student will have been approved for a private day school
placement, with the parent or guardian giving permission for the records to be sent
to an appropriate non-public school, such as Hannah More.
Curriculum
Hannah More operates three Type II Schools serving students with autism, Asperger
syndrome, or other related disorders, or emotional disturbance. These schools are
located in Anne Arundel County (Hannah More at Millersville Elementary School, Hannah
More at Severn River Middle School, and Hannah More at Severna Park High School).
Enrollment is limited to students residing in the county of the host school.
A Type II School is a cooperative effort between Hannah More and the local school
system. Hannah More provides the administrative leadership, teaching and counseling
staff and some related services, including psychiatric consultation. The local school
system provides the building space, some related services and access to building
resources such as the media center. The primary goal of a Type II School is to integrate
students into the host (public) school’s instructional program to the greatest extent
appropriate. The Type II Schools are designed to serve those students whose needs
exceed the resources of the local school system but do not require the support and
resources available in a full time nonpublic school placement.
Students typically begin taking all classes within the self-contained Hannah More
classrooms. As students progress academically and socially, they are mainstreamed
into a general education class within the host school that is consistent with their
skill set. Typically by the 10th grade, students are “mainstreamed” in two or three
of their eight classes. By 11th and 12th grades, students will likely attend four
to six classes with general education students. Students have access to the full
continuum of classes at the host school (i.e. special education through honors).
Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as music,
sports and after school groups. Hannah More staff (teacher assistants) provides
support to the students in outside classes. Support can range from 1:1 assistance
in the classroom to daily or weekly teacher check-ins.
