Opening in August, 2009, The Forbush School at Anne Arundel will serve children ages ten to 21 with autism, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD), developmental delays in one or more areas, severe behavioral problems, multiple learning problems and other related disorders, and provides special education services and related services for these disorders.

After a period of evaluation, individualized education programs are developed to meet each child’s specific needs. Skills are taught in highly structured settings, such as direct instruction, than are introduced in to less structured, naturalistic settings. This design helps to enhance skill development while improving generalization. Additional components of the program include small group instruction, individualized student daily schedules, life skills training and leisure skills training, in addition to academic instruction. All areas of instruction and behavior management utilize applied behavior analysis principles.

Parents are encouraged to participate fully in decisions regarding programming for their children. Staff and parents work together to carry over skills into the home environment.

The Forbush School at Anne Arundel is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education as a Type II Program and is located in The Ruth Parker Eason School in Millersville, MD. The students have opportunities to participate in Art, Music, Physical Education and other special programs with the public school students at The Ruth Parker Eason School. The school operates on an 11 month schedule, following the Anne Arundel public schools schedule.

The Staff
Staff at The Forbush School at Anne Arundel includes certified teachers, teacher assistants, 1:1 teacher aides, licensed speech language pathologists, licensed occupational therapists, licensed psychologist and behavioral support staff.
