Volunteers at Sheppard Pratt
Volunteers and interns may be found side by side with our doctors, nurses, teachers
and other clinicians and professionals every day of the week supporting the cause
of the mentally ill in any way they can. The quality of every patient’s stay is
enhanced by their efforts.
Volunteering in your community has many benefits. The donation of your time is an
investment in yourself; experience cannot be given a price tag. You will come away
enriched with new skills, contacts and a sense of satisfaction that your time was
well invested. A commitment of eight hours a week can make a noticeable difference
in a single life, or even the community and health system as a whole.
Qualifying Criteria You must:
- Meet the minimum age requirement, 16 years of age, to be eligible to volunteer in
a support area.
- Be able to make a minimum 3 month and 8 hour per week time commitment and provide
at least 100 hours of service.
Successful volunteer/intern experiences can be a great addition to your
resume. If you have time and energy to spare, spend it where your volunteer/intern
hours really count - at Sheppard Pratt Health System!
Volunteer Services offers unpaid volunteer and internship experiences in a variety
of areas; inpatient units, day hospitals, medical library, research, schools, gift
or thrift shop and clerical support areas. We ask for a minimum three-month commitment
and will work with your interests and availability to find the best placement for
you. Candidates must successfully complete a two-stage interview process, orientation
to the health system, and Tuberculosis Testing.
Student Interns must:
- Have some background in psychology or a related area;
- Be a high school or college junior, senior, or graduate student; and
- Clearly understand and meet your school requirements
Scheduling is based on semester rotations:
Fall: September – December
Spring: January – May
Summer: June – August.
Therefore, interviews and placements are not available after the 15th of September, January
or June for students and interns.
