Sheppard Pratt Health System has developed a comprehensive substance abuse education and prevention program aimed at assisting Maryland's youth to succeed in today's world.

The philosophy of the Sheppard Pratt Substance Abuse Education and Prevention program is a holistic one. It works to make an impact on the young person's whole life, including parents, teachers, friends. Making responsible decisions about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs is more complex today than ever before. Sheppard Pratt is dedicated to ensuring that the youth in our region have the best opportunity to grow up free of all illegal drugs.

All services are provided by the Sheppard Pratt Office of Substance Abuse Education and Prevention Services, under the leadership of Michael M. Gimbel, director. Moderate fees are charged.

The Sheppard Pratt Substance Abuse education and prevention programs address the reasons that young people use alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs including:

  • The influence of peer pressure and the powerful influence of fitting with one's peers;

  • The need to escape anxiety;

  • The desire to experience pleasurable feelings, to relax, or to seek excitement;

  • To satisfy curiosity or to reduce boredom;

  • As an escape from an intolerable situation or as a means of masking low self esteem.
