The Adult Unit at Sheppard Pratt is a 21-bed unit located on our historic Ellicott City campus that serves adult patients ages 18 and older who suffer from one or more psychiatric disorders. We treat a wide range of psychiatric disorders on this unit, including, but not limited to, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, and psychosis.

Our treatment method begins with immediate crisis intervention and medication management, and is managed with the assistance of a full, interdisciplinary team that consists of a physician, social work specialists, aftercare and discharge specialists, and highly trained nursing staff. The goal of the unit is symptom management and medical stabilization until the patient can be transferred to a lower level of care such as a day hospital or outpatient program. Because each patient’s situation is unique, we work toward step down options that are tailored to meet each patient’s individual circumstances. In conjunction with medication management, we provide a variety of daily psycho-educational groups that teach patients how to best cope with their disorder. We believe that family involvement is a key component to recovery and so we encourage this throughout the entire course of treatment, including discharge planning for the patient.
